Xavier Vigney is the new IKF CA State Superheavyweight Champion.

"A battle of contrasting body types marked the battle for the IKF California Super Heavyweight as 6'8" Xavier Vigney took on 6'3" 274 lbs Manuel Mancha. Vigney, who is so tall that he enters the ring by stepping over the top rope, had a huge reach advantage and used that advantage to great effect. Mancha was taking repeated punches as he moved forward but proved to have an anvil of a head, pressing gamely forward despit the punishment Vigney was dealing him but in the end Mancha had no answer for Vigney's reach and the Ref called the action at 1:17 of the forth round. Vigney will challenge Jon "Big Sexy" Hurney for the US Super Heavyweight title at the next AK Promotion event in July." -questionablestoppage.com

Leslie "The Peacemaker" Smith has completed her training with at Kaewsamrit gym and will be competing in her first professional Muay Thai fight in Bangkok, Thailand this Saturday.

Leslie's dedication is paying off she has made improvements by leaps and bounds since joining the team and IMO she is one of the toughest and most dedicated athletes around. If she keeps up this pace she will be fighting for the Strikefore title within a couple of years.

Xavier dominated his opponent Mike Loos from the start of the contest outlanding his opponent 6-1 on every exchange and scored two standing eight counts. Loos gamely tried to fight but was simply no match for the size, speed, and power of Vigney. The doctor stopped the fight after the first round.

Jimmy Machado stepped in on just one days notice to replace Tyler Cronin. Jimmy fought like a true warrior hurting his opponent several times throughout the contest. Unfortunately the rapid weight cut combined with the fact he hadn't been training for this fight caught up with Machado in the third round. Morales showed good composure and heart as he weathered the inital storm and came back strong to score a TKO at the end of round three.

Congrats to Mr. Morales on a hard fought victory.

Roy Boughton wins IFC Tournament

The real news coming out of the show based on IFC’s history anyway will likely be Roy Broughton winning the light heavyweight tournament by defeating Karl Lange and Jeremy Rosales. One issue in this tournament was whether Broughton should have been penalized or perhaps even disqualified in round 1 of the Rosales fight when the Team Cesar Gracie fighter deliberately threw a kick to the head of a downed opponent. Rosales made it to the end of the round but in round 2 just didn’t seem the same and was quickly dispatched by TKO to award Broughton the win.

A Grand Affair Set for Sacramento's Historic Event!

The countdown is on for what to be one of Sacramento, CA’s largest kickboxing events in years! The stage is set to bring new light to a sport not so in the spotlight but still standing strong and ready to show its greatness!

AK Promotions of Rocklin, CA and partner- Tommy T's Comedy and Dinner Theatre of Rancho Cordova, CA have plans to light a fire to ignite a new wave of kickboxing entertainment in the Sac. Area. This is the third show in the past six months and both prior shows have been overall very successful with action- packed bouts, a sellout show on the first one and a respectable crowd at the second show in a larger venue. Fans left wanting more and now they will get their chance to taste it once again...but this time with a bit more flare!

The Doubletree Hotel of Sacramento, CA is once again opening its doors to AK Promotions- Fri. Feb. 12th at 7:PM. They were impressed enough with the last show back on Nov. 22^nd '09 to give the promotion company its beautiful Grand Ballroom this time around which is adorned with enough chandelier to impress a prince!

On fight night, the Grand Ballroom will be filled with chairs and a kickboxing ring at center mass. Lighting and Sound Producer Mr. Dennis Smith will have the ring aglow with proper lighting that will illuminate the room with a Vegas fight night ambiance. Plus, the film crew on hand will give the feel of a grand affair! Music will be blasting with the hottest sounds that will circulate and delight the ears of fight fans as they enjoy alcoholic beverages and snacks served by experienced waitresses from Tommy T's Comedy and Dinner Theatre from bars set up inside the Ballroom.

Next, Ring Announcer (L) Wayne Wilson of Elk Grove, CA will take center stage introducing the officials and the performer of the National Anthem who is recording artist (R) Aaron Young (AKA- AY) Young currently has songs playing on several local radio stations. He is the latest winner in a Craigslist National Anthem singing contest that AK Promotions does to find the best performer for its shows. As always, the talent was awesome- the final three had to audition twice but in the end, ‘AY’ pulled if off with his control and powerful singing talent.

With so much going on around the world today, like the horrific earthquake in Haiti, fight fans here in America will be reminded of how great this country is as we continue to assist those in great need across the ocean. Rest assured that Aaron’s rendition of the National Anthem will set the stage for our humility as world citizens as well as the great sports entertainment to come that evening.

As fighters take their position on stage, spotlights will beam them and music will blast as fog fills the air!
Ring girls will lead the way and no doubt get their share of attention as well. Soon both fighters will enter the ring on separate planks preparing to do battle in serious feet and fists of fury!

Over 15 bouts of Muay Thai / Kickboxing including men, women and a special IKF Junior title fight will be one of the main events of the evening. Perhaps, two of the smallest in the ring, may in fact have the biggest impact on the entire event. When 12 year old and two time (L) IKF World Classic Champion Katrina “The Storm” Nahe of Antioch, CA battles (R) 14 year old Aneka Otte of Scottsdale, AZ, the roof may explode due to the noise fight fans will make for this much anticipated fight! The adult fighters that evening will really need to push to out-do this fight as each camp is predicting large turnouts of cheering fans with all the bells, whistles and signs needed to make this fight a real super fight!

Trainers of these two young ladies made it clear- (Mr. Dennis Guila for Nahe and Mr. Bob Karmel for Otte) that they are training hard and plan to take full advantage of this historic IKF title fight. It’s going to be a war!

Now, saying all that, it may seem as though Nahe Vs Otte is the main event, not so. Actually, there is a smoking semi- main event and a potential title exchange in the main event if it goes in trainer Dan Blacks’ of Concord, CA direction. Black feels that his fighter (R) Tyler Cronin (8-2) replacing Rick Erlec Due to personal issue, Erlic had to pull out of the fight this week) can take out the defending IKF West Champion… the very crafty (L) T. J. Arcangle’s of San Francisco, CA. However, long-time veteran trainer of world champions in Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts, Kru Sam P. who is always quiet and confident doesn’t feel this is possible. Kru Sam believes T. J. is also destined to become a world champion…we will just have to see!

Jon Pryor of Sacramento, CA who is talented with flashy boxing and kicking combinations, will get another shot for an IKF title as he takes on champion
Bryan Padilla who is trained by former champion Rudi Ott of Milpitas, CA. Pryor fell a little short in his last outing for a title. However, in the words of Cedric Robinson, trainer of Pryor and owner of Sacramento based Robinson’s Tae Kwon Do Clubs,“ If Jon does what he is suppose to, the title stays in Sac-town!” Sounds like fighting words!

Rick Erlec defeats Psycho Sonny Ramos by TKO!

Prettyboy Rick Erlec Defeats Psycho Sonny Ramos by TKO in the first round. Prettyboy set the pace from the start using his long reach and superior Muay Thai skills to hurt Ramos cutting him early. Ramos sensing he was outmatched on the feet tried to initiate a takedown but instead was takendown and severly beaten by Erlec until referee Todd Atkins stepped in to save Ramos at 2:55 of Round 1.

"The Smooth Killer" George Miller started things off nicely with a TKO win over Folsom MMA's Jose Mares. Mares was dropped right off the bat with a stiff straight right got up quickly and while he was able to eventually take Miller down he wasted all his energy in the process. Miller easily swept his opponent and finished the first round with dominating ground and pound. In the second round it was clear Mares had nothing left and was being picked apart by Miller standing prompting the referee to stop the fight half way through the second round.

Richard Nero dominated the 1st round dropping his opponent with a knee to the face and then putting on a BJJ Clinic in the 1st, passing his opponents guard twice and mounting him.. in the second to his opponents credit, Garcia knowing he was outmatched technically came out throwing big haymakers one of which caught Richard and stunned him and the Ref stopped the fight. quick stoppage IMO but its amateur and they stop it quicker than normal.

Roy "Baby Boy" Boughton started things off quickly looking to get his opponent Kerry "The Ish" Brown to the ground. Browns wrestling background and size advantage was able to offer some resistance initially however Boughton once again showed brains beat brawn as tricked Brown into a BJJ match. after another Houdini backcontrol/armbar escape Roy put on a BJJ Clinic taking side, mount, and then back for the RNC Finish in the 1st Round.

Also in Colorado Lesilie Smith defended her title with a TKO win in round two, this is a writeup from the promotions website:

Main event: Leslie Smith VS Louise Johnson for the Kick Down women's professional bantamweight title. Johnson had strong punches early that Smith answered with knees while clinched. The fighters worked into and out of the clinch with both landing solid strikes including three head kicks by Smith. There was a timeout so Johnson could recover from an accidental groin kick and upon the restart the combatants flurried until the round ended. Round two had Smith landing a flurry that momentarily dropped Johnson. Johnson recovered and came back to her feet. The fighters exchanged strikes until Smith scored with a head kick that stunned Johnson. What Happened to Muay Thai in Northern California?

When I first came to America from England I was shocked at how few Muay Thai events were taking place in the country. Coming from Europe, where you could fight every week at events pulling in crowds of 10-15 thousand people, it was a surprise to me to see so few events in the U.S., and to add to my surprise these U.S. events only drew in crowds of one to three thousand people.

MUAY THAI is a great spectator sport that is very exciting to watch live, people in Europe and Asia love the sport so why isn’t it popular in America? People in America love MMA as is evident by the crowds seen at MMA events and the PPV numbers that MMA puts up, so why not Muay Thai? Stand up is a big part of MMA so you would think the fan base that loves MMA would also like Muay Thai? I think that they do but they do not attend Muay Thai events and unfortunately I can understand why.

BEFORE AN MMA event the talk around the water cooler is “who do you think will win the upcoming fight”? Everyone has their point of view and reason for picking the fighter they think will win. The reason that these conversations take place is because these fights are competitive and both fighters have an equal chance of winning. This is not the case in Muay Thai fights I have been to in Northern California, most of the fights are mismatched, one sided and in fact a lot of coaches won’t event put their fighter in unless he is sure that his fighter will win. The fight is more about the coaches and their reputations, than it is about the fighters or the sport.

ALSO IN MMA there is one champion per weight division and the contenders work their way up the ranks until they get the chance to fight for a title, everyone knows who the champion is and the title belt has true meaning. This is the same for Muay Thai in Europe where there are two major organizations and if you win one of the title belts it has true meaning.

I laugh when I see Muay Thai fight posters and you have 20 people most of them amateurs and they all have title belts and then you go to the event and then find out some of these so called “champions” have had only 3 fights! When I go to see a “champion” fight I expect to see a seasoned veteran fighter that is experienced in the art of Muay Thai and not a novice fighter still learning the sport. A championship should be earned by hard work, dedication and wins over the best athletes in the sport and not given out as a promotional tool as has been the case in Northern California. MMA has learned this lesson well and all the contenders have to work their way up the ranks in order to fight the champion and if they do win the title they have are well respected by the public as an experienced champion and even if they lose they are still respected and so is the sport. This is also the case for Muay Thai in Europe and Asia where like MMA you are even held in high regard even if you are only a contender for Championship!

THE FAIRTEX (USMF's WAR OF THE HEROES) promoted event which I went to recently was a breath of fresh air for events in Northern California and hopefully we can see more events like this. On the east coast they are now promoting very good Muay Thai events that you see well matched fights with the coaches and fighters taking risks and having difficult fights, this makes the fighters improve and they get to the point that they can compete with the best, including the European and Asian Muay Thai fighters.

I personally will be taking some fighters the USA amateur championships in Richmond, Virginia in June, my fighter will be facing some of the top amateurs in the country we may or may not win, but the fighters will gain valuable experience that will help them in future events. I suggest other gyms in Northern California to do the same so that we can improve Muay Thai and who knows, one day we may even compete with MMA as the top martial arts sports.

Tyler Cronin has defeated the representative from Hong Kong by 4th round TKO. Tyler broke his opponents nose in the 3rd round with elbow combination's then followed up in the 4th round for the stoppage.

World Championships 2009

The world championships start in just a few days and from all reports Tyler Cronin is ready for war. Tyler left two weeks ago to prepare in Thailand and that decision has paid off dividends in both strength and conditioning.

Tyler has also been matched up to fight for the legendary Jongsannan "Woodenman" Fairtex in his home village in Northern Thailand. Fights will take place December 7th, just 2 days after the World Championships.
